Stunning colour combination in Colonial White with White/Black interior, this Skyliner with its re-tractable hard top garners a lot of attention with the roof up or down!
The Skyliner wowed crowds on its unveiling being the first mass produced vehicle with a “hide-away hardtop”. Contrary to conventional hydraulics - the hardtop used 7 reversable electric motors, four lift jacks, a series of relays, 10 limit switches, ten solenoids and 6 locking mechanisms (4 for the roof, 2 for the trunk lid). Though initially looked upon as unreliable due to the complexity of the mechanism – the roof proved to be very reliable.
The Skyliner was given an array of engine and transmission options from 272ci V8s through to 312ci V8’s in the 1957 model year – with either manual or automatic transmissions.
Other options such as power brakes, powered front seat, power steering, power windows, heater and windshield defroster were optional extras as well.
Approximately 48,394 Skyliners were produced between 1957 to 1959 making these beautiful cars quite rare on the roads today.
There Skyliner we have here has been treated to a body on restoration a few years ago and is in fantastic condition.
The owner has commented that the body was stripped back to bare metal and repainted in the original Colonial White, interior was retrimmed with black inner cloth with outer vinyl in white and the “hideaway roof” was repaired and is now fully functioning.
The vehicle was already running a 390ci FE Bigblock that was subsequently rebuilt with mild cams, roller rockers, upgraded pistons etc.
Under dash mounted air-conditioning was installed at the same time as well as an aluminium radiator for extra cooling.
The Skyliner features its original power steering and power brakes making it a delight to drive.
A lot of time and money has been invested in this Skyliner, now ready for you to enjoy.
